Marker, Emblem, Symbol, Signal: Artists Reflect on the Flag

June 11 – October 11, 2021

In this moment of polarization, Americans have used flags to publicly stake their positions, rally around causes, and declare allegiances. To explore the symbolic possibilities and perils of flags, the New York-based project Art for Artists asked 13 artists to contribute works to an exchange portfolio in response. Completed in 2020 in a range of media, these works assess our collective past and present, examine our obsessions, and consider our futures.

Participating artists: Chloe Bass, Natalie Baxter, Daniel Bejar, Mel Chin, Pamela Council, DARNstudio, Ghost of a Dream, Vandana Jain, Kirsten Hassenfeld, Sarah Sandman, David Scher, Dread Scott, Sanne Vaassen

Curated by Adam Eckstrom for Art for Artists and organized at New-York Historical by Rebecca Klassen, associate curator of material culture. This exhibition features recent acquisitions donated by flag collector John Monsky.

Exhibitions at New-York Historical are made possible by Dr. Agnes Hsu-Tang and Oscar Tang, the Saunders Trust for American History, the Evelyn & Seymour Neuman Fund, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
