EVENT DETAILS

In 1867, Mark Twain departed New York Harbor by steamship for a five-and-a-half-month excursion throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. His humorous, opinionated, and revealing observations of sites and inhabitants he encountered first appeared as a series of letters in a San Francisco newspaper, then as the book The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrims’ Progress, one of the bestselling travelogues of all time. Take a tour of the exhibition that illuminates Twain’s fabled journey using original documents, photographs, artwork, costumes, and an interactive media experience. Organized in partnership with the Shapell Manuscript Foundation.
